Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting
On December 14, 2012 in Sandy Hook, Connecticut an armed gunman went into an elementary school and killed 26 people and among those were 20 children. It's very troubling to think that someone can kill innocent children. Just a few hours before the incident the children were being dropped off by their parents probably excited it was Friday and almost the weekend and getting closer to Christmas like any child that age. The parents who thought that their kids would be safe and getting an education while there at work. Then get a phone call saying there child has been murdered in a school shooting. To bury your own child is the hardest thing a parent can go through. My heart goes out to those who lost their loved. Also the six educators who made it there life's work to educate young minds were killed for their love of teaching young children. To think that helping young children can lead to something as horrific as this hard to wrap your mind around.
The gunman whose name is Adam Lanza was 20 years old at the time of the shooting. Those around him said he was a very troubled individual who had mental health issues. Former classmates said that he was socially awkward and his family members said that he had outburst a lot. His older brother Ryan Lanza was mistakenly identified as the shooter since the gunman was carrying his ID. And the Ryan Lanza profile Facebook picture was shared over 12,000 times within in minutes. This is why media outlets need to do research before releasing data like this that can damage someone's name. Police have reported that Ryan Lanza who is the older brother of Adam Lanza is not the gunman and has no involvement in the shooting. The gunman Adam Lanza took his own life after his horrific crime.
These tragedies in America have become common place and something needs to be done. Even right after the shooting, right-wing media and gun advocates were saying now is not the time to talk about politics. Now is the perfect time to talk about stricter gun control laws. When 9/11 happened what would people say if the Democrats criticized Bush for talking about bringing justice for the perpetrators of the attacks. When tragedies like this happen the immediate reaction should be how do we prevent something like this happening again. A common argument is that stricter gun laws will take the guns out of law-abiding citizens hands and this could create a black market. This might be true but I'm not in favor of banning all gun ownership. What I'm in favor of is having gun ownership the same as getting a license for a vehicle. Also there should be yearly psyche evaluations were a Psychiatrist test to see if your competent. Also military grade weaponry should not be available to the general public.
Politicians are scared to talk about stricter gun ownership laws due to how romanticized gun ownership is in our country. Also organizations like the national rifle association which is funded by the major gun companies and whose members are a large bloc of the Republican Party feed propaganda that President Obama is going to take away everybody's rights to own guns. This is far from the truth and President Obama has never even talked about limiting gun ownership. When mayors of major cities such as Washington DC or Chicago enact laws that prohibit handgun ownership there labeled unconstitutional. When pro-gun advocates use the constitution to defend against critics is ridiculous. In those days there were no fully automatic weapons and pistols that can hold 20 or 30 rounds of ammunition. As a country we need to stop pandering to these groups and look at the greater picture and have an open discussion to find a solution.
